Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of sturdy bread (Texas toast, brioche, or challah recommended)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based for vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of sugar or sweetener (optional)
  • Butter or cooking spray (for air fryer basket)

Optional Variations

  • Gluten-free bread (to make gluten-free)
  • Crushed strawberries or blueberries (berry infusion)
  • Flaxseed or chia seed mixture (egg replacer for vegan version)
  • Melted chocolate or cocoa powder (for chocolate lovers)
  • Additional spices like ground ginger or cardamom (for spiced up flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of sugar until well combined and aromatic.
  2. Cut the Bread into Sticks: Take thick slices of bread and slice each into even sticks about 1 inch wide. Use sturdier bread to hold up during soaking and air frying.
  3. Dip Bread Sticks in Custard: Fully immerse each bread stick into the custard mixture one at a time, allowing them to soak for a few seconds to absorb the liquid well.
  4. Preheat and Prepare the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) and lightly spray the basket with cooking spray or brush with melted butter to prevent sticking.
  5. Arrange and Cook: Place the soaked sticks in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even golden crispiness.
  6. Serve Hot: Remove when the sticks are perfectly crisp and golden. Serve immediately with your favorite syrup or toppings.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread to better absorb custard without falling apart.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket to allow even crisping.
  • Flip sticks halfway through cooking to achieve all-around crunch and avoid sogginess.
  • Preheat the air fryer for faster cooking and better texture.
  • Customize spices according to taste; try adding clove or cardamom for variety.
