Ideal for game days, casual snacking, or parties, these bold and flavorful firecrackers are easy to make using simple pantry staples and customizable to suit all taste preferences and dietary needs.

Ingredients

Wrappers and Frying

  • Rice Paper Wrappers – as needed
  • Neutral Oil with high smoke point (such as vegetable or canola oil) – enough for deep frying

Spicy Seasoning Blend

  • Chili Powder – 1 tbsp
  • Cayenne Pepper – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
  • Paprika – 1 tbsp
  • Garlic Powder – 1 tsp

Sweetener

  • Honey or Maple Syrup – 1 to 2 tbsp for drizzling

Filling Options

  • Cream Cheese – 4 oz (optional)
  • Cooked Sausage (crumbled) – 1/2 cup (optional)
  • Or vegetarian fillings like sautéed mushrooms or spinach – 1/2 cup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wrappers: Soften each rice paper wrapper briefly in warm water until pliable but not soggy. This ensures they are easy to fold without tearing.
  2. Add the Filling: Mix your spicy seasoning blend with the chosen filling (cream cheese, sausage, or vegetables). Place a small spoonful of this mixture in the center of each softened wrapper, being careful not to overfill to avoid breaking.
  3. Fold and Seal: Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling, then roll tightly from one end to the other, ensuring the filling is fully enclosed.
  4. Heat the Oil: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to about 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the firecrackers for even frying.
  5. Fry Until Golden: Carefully fry the wrapped firecrackers in batches, cooking each side for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Drizzle with Sweetener: While still hot, lightly drizzle honey or maple syrup over the firecrackers to balance the heat with a touch of sweetness.

Notes

  • Use fresh rice paper wrappers for easier handling and less tearing.
  • Maintain oil temperature steadily at 350°F to achieve crispy, non-greasy firecrackers.
  • Do not overfill to avoid wrapper breaking during frying.
  • Drain fried firecrackers well on paper towels to keep them light and crunchy.
  • Adjust the spice mix amounts to suit your preferred heat level.
