Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups cooked or canned black beans, rinsed and drained
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • to ½ cup natural sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

Optional Add-Ins

  • ¼ cup chocolate chips or chunks
  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts or almonds
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon or chili powder (for spiced twist)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking pan with parchment paper. Rinse and drain the black beans thoroughly to remove excess moisture.
  2. Blend the Black Beans: Place the black beans in a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth, creating a creamy base without flour.
  3. Add the Wet Ingredients: To the pureed beans, add eggs, your chosen sweetener, and vanilla extract. Blend again until the mixture is smooth and silky.
  4. Incorporate the Dry Ingredients: Stir in the cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt by hand, mixing gently to maintain a fudgy texture. Fold in any optional chocolate chips or nuts now.
  5. Bake and Cool: Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out mostly clean. Let the brownies cool completely before slicing to set the texture.

Notes

  • Rinse well: Properly rinse canned beans to eliminate any metallic or canned flavor.
  • Don’t overbake: Remove brownies when a toothpick has moist crumbs to ensure chewiness.
  • Use a food processor: For the smoothest batter, blend thoroughly.
  • Allow to cool: Cooling brownies fully enhances flavor and texture.
  • Experiment with sweeteners: Try different natural sweeteners to find your preferred taste.
