Fried Cheese Bites

Fried Cheese Bites

Fried Cheese Bites are crispy, gooey snack bites with a crunchy exterior and melted cheese center. Perfect as an easy appetizer or party treat, they are quick to make, customizable with various cheeses and seasonings, and ideal for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese

  • 8 oz firm yet melty cheese (mozzarella or cheddar), cut into 1-inch cubes

Coating

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (seasoned lightly with salt and pepper)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs for gluten-free option)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp paprika, cayenne pepper or chili flakes (for spicy version)

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil or canola oil (enough for deep frying, approximately 2 cups)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cheese: Cut your chosen cheese into bite-sized cubes, about 1 inch each, to ensure even cooking and a molten center.
  2. Set Up the Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls — one with flour seasoned with salt and pepper, the second with beaten eggs, and the third with seasoned breadcrumbs or panko.
  3. Bread the Cheese Cubes: Dredge each cheese cube first in the flour, then dip into the egg, and finally coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere well.
  4. Chill the Cheese Bites: Place the breaded cheese cubes on a parchment-lined tray and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm the coating and prevent cheese leaks during frying.
  5. Fry to Perfection: Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the bites in small batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain excess oil on paper towels.
  6. Serve Warm: Enjoy immediately to savor the crispy crust and gooey melted center. Pair with your favorite dipping sauces for added flavor.

Notes

  • Chill Before Frying: Refrigerating the breaded bites helps the coating stick and prevents cheese from leaking.
  • Use Panko Breadcrumbs: They provide a lighter, crispier texture than regular breadcrumbs.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Fry in small batches to keep oil temperature steady and maintain crispness.
  • Test Oil Temperature: Keep oil at 350°F using a thermometer to avoid greasy or burnt bites.
  • Drain Well: Place fried bites on paper towels to remove excess oil before serving.
