Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean preferred)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté the aromatics and mushrooms: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant. Toss in sliced button mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown.
  2. Brown the ground beef: Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon for even cooking.
  3. Create the sauce base: Sprinkle flour evenly over the beef and vegetable mixture, stirring constantly for about a minute to cook out the raw flour taste. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps, allowing the sauce to thicken.
  4. Finish with sour cream: Reduce heat to low and stir in sour cream until fully incorporated, creating a creamy, smooth sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting for your preference.
  5. Combine with noodles and serve: Meanwhile, cook egg noodles according to package instructions, drain, and either toss them directly into the sauce or plate noodles topped with the stroganoff. Garnish as desired and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and keep the sauce from becoming oily.
  • Don’t skip the mushrooms; they add essential earthy flavor and contrast the creamy sauce perfectly.
  • Add flour gradually to avoid clumping and ensure a smooth, velvety sauce.
  • Simmer gently after adding sour cream to prevent curdling.
  • Let the stroganoff rest briefly to allow flavors to meld beautifully.
