Ingredients

Scale

Bagel & Bread

  • 2 fresh firm bagels, sliced horizontally

Fruits

  • 1 firm ripe pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 crisp apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), thinly sliced

Cheese

  • 46 slices sharp cheddar cheese

Vegetables

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced (for caramelizing)

Others

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for caramelizing onions and toasting bagel)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or additional butter (optional, for caramelizing onions)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramelized Onions: Slice the onions thinly. Heat 1-2 tablespoons butter or oil in a skillet over low heat. Add onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown and sweetly fragrant.
  2. Slice the Fruits and Bagel: Thinly slice the pear and apple. Slice each bagel horizontally to create the base and top of the sandwich.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich: Place cheddar cheese slices on the bottom half of the bagel. Layer evenly with pear and apple slices. Spread a generous amount of caramelized onions on top of the fruit. Add a final layer of cheddar cheese and cover with the top half of the bagel.
  4. Grill to Perfection: Butter the outside of each bagel half. Heat a skillet over medium heat and grill the sandwich, cooking each side for 3-4 minutes until the bagel is golden brown and the cheese is melted inside.
  5. Slice and Serve: Let the sandwich rest for one minute to allow the flavors to meld. Slice as desired and serve warm for maximum flavor.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions slowly over low heat to develop their natural sweetness.
  • Thinly slice pear and apple to avoid overpowering the cheese and to prevent sogginess.
  • Use high-quality sharp cheddar cheese for best melting and flavor.
  • Choose sturdy bagels that can hold juicy fruits and fillings without falling apart.
  • Cook over medium heat to ensure even toasting without burning the bagel.
