Salisbury Steak Patties
- 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1–2 tablespoons oil or butter for cooking
Mushroom & Onion Gravy
- 2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 1 cup chopped onions
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil for sautéing
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lbs Russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme. Shape the mixture into even oval patties about 1/2-inch thick. Avoid overmixing to keep patties tender.
- Start Cooking the Patties: Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until a deep golden crust forms. Remove patties from skillet and set aside, leaving drippings for the gravy.
- Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy: Add sliced mushrooms and chopped onions to the skillet with drippings. Sauté for 7-8 minutes until caramelized. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir to coat; cook 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping the pan to dissolve browned bits. Simmer until gravy thickens to a silky consistency.
- Combine and Simmer: Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the mushroom and onion gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes to finish cooking and blend flavors.
- Prepare the Garlic Mashed Potatoes: While patties cook, boil peeled and chopped potatoes until fork-tender. Drain and mash with softened butter, minced garlic, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Keep warm until serving.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef to keep patties juicy without excess fat.
- Mix meat ingredients just until combined to avoid tough patties.
- Brown patties well to develop rich, caramelized flavor.
- Simmer gravy and patties gently on low heat for tender steak and thick gravy.
- Use warm milk in mashed potatoes for creamy texture without gumminess.
